Strawberry Shortcake Birthday Party!

Invitations:

Welcome Ideas:

  • Copy the characters from Strawberry Shortcake on a color copier (Kinko's can do this for you), cut them out, and use them for nametags. Or, if you're computer savvy, save the Strawberry Shortcake images from their website and print out your own nametags.
  • Put butcher paper on a wall near the entry with the characters drawn or taped on a pink background. Let each child draw herself on the wall for "Strawberry Shortcake Grafitti." Or with help, have the guests leave a message for the birthday child.

Games & Activities:

  • Stick the Hat on Strawberry Shortcake - Get your guests into the spirit of the theme with this version of Pin the Tail on the Donkey. Before the party, draw a large picture of Strawberry Shortcake (without her hat) on butcher paper or cardboard and hang it on the wall. Then, draw and cut out a hat for each player. At the party, stick tape to the back of each player’s hat and give each guest a chance to stick his or her hat on Strawberry Shortcake while blindfolded. Whoever comes closest, wins!
  • Berry Thief - Someone has stolen a prize berry from Strawberry Shortcake! In this fun version of tag, no one knows who the thief is except the thief herself. Before starting, explain to the kids that whoever is holding the prize berry (this can be a marble, a small plastic toy, etc.) is the Thief. Then it’s time to secretly slip the berry into one player’s hand without the other players seeing you do it. To do this, hide the berry in your fist and walk from child to child pretending to put it in each player’s hand. (Players should act nonchalant whether they receive the berry or not.) Once you actually transfer the berry to a player, continue pretending to transfer it to a few more players before announcing that you no longer have it. Then, start the game by shouting “Find the Berry!”
Players try to determine who the thief is by tagging each other, but they’ll be wary of one another since the thief’s identity is unknown. The thief deceives players by tagging them, while managing not to get tagged himself. When tagged, a player must show the tagger what’s in his or her hand. If it’s nothing, both players resume running. If a player tags the thief, the tagger gets the berry and becomes the new thief. When this occurs, both the current and the previous thief should act as though no transfer has occurred. For large groups of ten or more, double the fun by designating two thieves instead of one!
  • Berry Patch Hunt - This treasure hunt is great for outdoors in your backyard, but can be set up indoors, too. You’ll need to set up before guests arrive so no one sees where you place hints and prizes. String a ball of green yarn (strawberry vines) around your yard, making sure to go around, through, under, and over as many objects as possible. The better the maze, the more fun kids will have unraveling the vines. Begin stringing the vine at a convenient spot to hide the final prize. (The kitchen window or door works well if hiding the birthday cake, so you can prepare while the kids are busy in the yard.) Work your way backwards, hiding favors, fun messages, or hints about the prize along the vine’s path. Remember that the place where you finish stringing is the spot where the children will begin.
  • Friendly Make & Take Placemats - For this activity, you’ll need crayons, thin pieces of cardboard (for stiffening the placemats), and a roll of clear Con-Tact paper. Also, purchase a Strawberry Shortcake coloring book with pages including her berry best friends Huckleberry Pie, Angel Cake, Ginger Snap, Orange Blossom, Honey Pie, Pupcake and Custard. At the party, let the kids color a few pages. While they color, cut the cardboard to match the size of two pages. When the kids finish, lay the pages on top of the cardboard and cover with Con-Tact paper.
  • Strawberry Stories - Wrap up your party with a Strawberry Shortcake video or book. Either one is a great way to calmly entertain kids while waiting for parents to arrive.

Food:

  • Berry Sparklers - These festive treats can be quickly prepared beforehand, or you can let the kids make them during the party instead. They’ll enjoy rolling and dipping their own colorful, sparkling berries! Strawberries work best, but blueberries and blackberries (or chunks of fruit your child enjoys) can be used for variety as well. First, wash whole strawberries and pat dry with a paper towel. Fill a few shallow bowls with colored sugar (available at most grocery stores) or make your own colors by stirring two drops of food coloring into 1/4 cup of sugar. Offer several different colors if setting this up as a party activity. For each quart of fruit, blend 8 oz. softened cream cheese, 4 tsp. confectioner’s sugar, 3 Tbs. milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. Whip with a fork until smooth and creamy. Hold the strawberries by their stems, dip each one in the cream cheese mixture, and roll in the colored sugar. Use toothpicks to spear blueberries, blackberries or chunks of fruit before dipping and rolling them.
  • Sandwich Rolls - Your guests will love these roll-up versions of their favorite sandwiches. You’ll need a package of large tortillas, peanut butter and jelly, thinly sliced lunch meat, lettuce, and cream cheese spread. Spread a thin layer of peanut butter on several tortillas. Cover with a layer of strawberry jelly or jam and roll up each one. Cut each roll in 2 to 3 sections. Use the cream cheese spread on the remainder of the tortillas. Cover the cream cheese with a layer of meat and then lettuce. Roll up each one and cut in sections as before. Spear with frilly toothpicks to hold them together, if necessary.
  • Strawberry Slushies  - You’ll need the following to make four drinks: 12 ice cubes, 32 strawberries, one cup frozen concentrated limeade, and one cup of water. Whirl ingredients in a blender, doing half at a time, if necessary. Serve slushies in clear glasses and add a thin slice of lime to the rim of each one for more fun!
  • Ginger Thins - These cookies are delicious and taste especially good with vanilla ice cream sandwiched in between two of them. To prepare, you’ll need: 3/4 cup margarine (or butter), 1 cup sugar, 1 egg, 1/2 cup molasses, 2 cups flour, 1/2 tsp. salt, 1 1/2 tsp. ginger, 1 tsp. cinnamon and some extra sugar to coat the cookies. In a mixing bowl, cream the margarine and sugar. Add the egg and the molasses; mix well.  In a separate bowl combine the flour, salt, ginger and cinnamon. Add to the wet ingredients; mix well.  Refrigerate the dough for at least 2 hours. Then, form small balls of dough and roll each one in sugar until well coated. Place dough balls on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake in a preheated oven for 10 minutes at 350 degrees F. Remove from the oven and let cool on the pan for 2-3 minutes longer. Remove from the pan and cool completely on a baking rack. Serve these cookies with milk, or make dessert sandwiches with vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!
