Science for Kid Websites
- Legos
- (I can hear you saying "Legos?!" Yep, there's
a website that shows you how to use Legos as a science
for kids learning tool. So get out those blocks and
build!)
- Kids Astronomy
- This site has lesson plans, science worksheets, and
great photos of the solar system for kids to explore.
- How
Stuff Works - Just like the name says, this website
has thousands of articles showing you "How Stuff
Works." They also have a newsletter that's either
daily or weekly (you choose), and includes contests for
the kids, Question of the Day, and Gadget of the Day. If
you don't mind email, it's worth the fun value.
- X-rays for Kids
- Check out x-rays of a turtle, clock, plants, and more
science for kids. This is courtesy of Cleveland Museum of
Natural History. Nothing fancy here, but it is unique.
- NASA
Space Science Education Resource Directory - Do a
search by grade level, topic, or keywords, and you'll
find posters, educator guides, science projects, and
more. As an example, I did a search for Elementary
grade resources on Saturn.
- Science
of Wildfires - Discover what a wildfire is, good vs.
bad wildfires, the elements of fire, and more. Sponsored
by Smokey the Bear.
- Kidsgardening
- "Helping young minds grow" is their motto,
and they provide lots of resources to help teach about
garden science for kids. For example, one month's focus
was on the potato: make a potato clock (yes, it is
possible), how to grow potatoes, the history of the
potato, etc. They also have an interesting section on
Hydroponics Science for Kids.
- Thinking
Fountain - Although this hasn't been updated in a few
years (!), there is so much good information that I can't
help but suggest a peek. Try a unit study on mold (even
showers can be science projects!), shapes, and air.
- Enchanted
Learning - Learn about dinosaurs, astronomy, and
explorer in this simple website for K-3.
- Thunk - If only this
website was around when I was a kid! All about
cryptology, or coded messaging, kids will really enjoy
sending secret messages and trying to break codes.
- FBI
for Kids - Ok, it's not exactly science for kids, but
this website explains how the FBI works and how they use
dogs in search and rescue, bomb and drug detection, and
more. This site is for K-5, but they also have another
site for older
students.
- Discovery
Channel - With 3 main sections: Teachers, Parents,
and Students, the Discovery website is a wealth of
information on geography, space exploration, the human
body, and mathmatics themes as well.
- Kathy
Schrock's Guide for Educators - Prepare to be
overwhelmed when you see the over 2,000 links Kathy has
posted on all sorts of subjects for teachers. She also
does a weekly email update so you can see what's been
added. I think if I list anything more you will get lost
in the Internet tangle, so we'll end with this mind
boggling site!
- Dinosaurs For Kids - Dinosaur facts, games, dinosaur fossil and track pictures, dinosaur ecards, dinosaur toys, coloring pages and more.
I will continue to add science for kid resources to this list
as I discover new finds. If you have a child science site you
wish to add, send it to the webmaster.
