San Jose Tech Museum Reopening

The San Jose Tech Museum of Innovation is simply bursting at the seams with fun "science" activities and events this month, and walking the floors in a sneak-peek, I could feel the excitement from the staff on its upcoming festival weekend. With the quality they so often display, and the support they give back to the community, San Jose Families.com has presented them with the "Families' Finest" award for October 2002.

After a month in hibernation, well, actually renovation and expansion, the San Jose Tech Museum is ready to open its doors to the public again this weekend, October 5 and 6. And they're not just re-opening, they are partying! Imagine live music, air dancers in the front, a multitude of friendly staffers, and new exhibits to touch and do. And that's not all.

The IMAX theater (within the San Jose Tech Museum) will host a film festival all weekend, featuring:

  • The Space Station
  • The Living Sea
  • Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzees
  • India - The Kingdom of the Tiger
  • Lewis & Clark - Great Journey West
  • Blue Planet
  • Journey into Amazing Caves
  • Mexico NEW!
  • Everest
  • Wolves
  • Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure
  • The Human Body NEW!

Running concurrently within the San Jose Tech Museum is a GadgetFEST. Follow the mylar balloons and visit the award-winning gadgets that are spread throughout the galleries. Since I got a preview this week, I was able to check out some of these high tech gizmos up close. One very interesting piece looked like a typical digital watch, but it actually measured the wearer's blood-sugar level without pricking! It uses electrical zaps to read the level of sugar in the blood, and reports it back to the watch screen. Neat-O! Especially if you're a diabetic. This is just one example of the technology-meets-humankind gadgets you can see this weekend.

Then there's the Flag of Hope community project that the San Jose Tech Museum sponsored. Over a thousand local children participated in the creation of this unusual monument to the future of technology. The kids were asked to write down how they would like technology to help others in the future. One wrote "Stop Pollution," another, "Make food out of waste." Its very size is awe-inspiring, and seems to fill most of the wall in New Venture Hall. So make sure to take a look after entering the lobby, it's a great tribute to our children's hopes and imaginations.

And last, but not least, the San Jose Tech Museum celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with several exciting events. On October 8, come to the museum and meet Hispanic NASA astronaut Sidney Gutierrez, and on October 12, Carlos Noriega. Both events are free, so you have no excuse to miss them! Also on October 12, the museum will host Dia de Raza with mariachi bands, dancers from the Mexican Heritage Corp., and exhibit contributions Hispanics have made to science and technology. There will also be showings of the IMAX movie, "Mexico" shown in both Spanish and English. Check the website link for times and dates.
