Monterey Bay Aquarium Shark Exhibit

As you enter the new exhibition at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, titled Sharks: Myth and Mystery, the gentle rhythm of drum music draws you into another world of tribal mystique. From Hawaiian huts to Mayan monuments, families explore ancient cultures’ views of the powerful and magnificent shark.

“Sharks and rays are part of the world’s cultural heritage,” said exhibit developer Ava Ferguson. “We’ve designed Sharks: Myth and Mystery to immerse visitors in this rich heritage and to challenge some of the stereotype people might hold about these incredible animals.”

As you would expect from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, kids have the opportunity to touch some beautiful creatures, as well as create rubbings of primitive carvings and make a shark hat craft. The exhibit is a thoughtful mix of live-animal tanks, hand-on areas, and historical multimedia. All ages will find something of interest, and all will be touched by the graceful intensity of both the sharks and rays.

Some of the cultures represented include the Pacific Islands, Amazon, Pacific Northwest, Australia, Africa, and Central America. It is very remarkable to note how various traditions developed around the sharks and rays, and how much fear is enveloped in the American culture.

In addition to a worthwhile social studies lesson, the simple beauty of the nearly two dozen marine and freshwater displays is captivating. This is the first time in 20 years a Galapagos shark has been on public display, and you can also view Hammerhead (our favorite), Zebra, Whitetip, Blacktip, Coral, Epaulette, and Brownbanded bamboo sharks.

Officially opening on April 2, 2004, Sharks: Myth and Mystery is free with your Monterey Bay Aquarium ticket or season pass.
