Monterey Bay Aquarium Exhibits

MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM: Explore the wonders of our ocean planet in nearly 200 galleries and exhibits at the nation’s finest aquarium. The award-winning Outer Bay galleries feature a million-gallon indoor ocean, viewed through the largest window in North America. It’s home to schools of tuna, sharks, barracuda, black sea turtles, pelagic rays and dolphinfish, plus the largest jellyfish exhibits anywhere. Other permanent exhibits include three playful sea otters; a towering three-story kelp forest; touch pools and other hands-on displays; and a walk-through shorebird aviary.

NEW SPECIAL EXHIBITION: “Sharks: Myth and Mystery” opens April 2, 2004. Explores how cultures around the world celebrate sharks and rays through art, dance, stories and other traditions. Features a dozen different cultures and nearly two dozen different species, including Galapagos sharks, scalloped hammerhead sharks, African catsharks, freshwater rays, southern stingrays, Pacific electric rays and more. Includes some of the largest live displays ever created for a special exhibition at the aquarium, touch pools and other interactive displays.

SPECIAL EXHIBITION: “Jellies: Living Art” combines living jellies displays and art installations in several different media, including blown glass, sculpture, and paintings. Visitors encounter the 30-foot-long blown-glass Seaforms by Dale Chihuly, charismatic blue jellies, a wall of lava lamps and the mind-bending moon jelly swarm tunnel. Visitors will also see spotted jellies, upside-down jellies and black sea nettles alongside artwork by Ernst Haeckel, Roger Brown, Rick Satava and Cork Marcheschi.

AUDITORIUM PROGRAMS: “Jellies” is a brief, high-definition movie followed by a question and answer session facilitated by aquarium staff. Other programs include “Exploring Monterey Canyon,” with live video of deep-sea explorations; and “Empty Oceans, Empty Nets,” addressing conservation issues in commercial fishing. Auditorium programs are included with aquarium admission; passes are distributed inside the aquarium.

OTHER PERMANENT EXHIBITS: “Splash Zone: Rock and Reef Homes.” This fun-filled family gallery features nearly 60 species, including African blackfooted penguins, moray eels, colorful corals and leafy sea dragons. Takes families on an interactive tour through two contrasting shoreline habitats—the Crowded Coral Reefs of tropical waters and the Rough Rocky Shores found in cool temperate regions. Over 30 hands-on exhibits, staff-led educational programs and specially designed play areas.

ADMISSION: All exhibits and programs included with aquarium admission – $19.95 adults; $17.95 senior (over 65); $15.95 youth and student (full-time college, with I.D.); $8.95 children 3-12 and the disabled; under 3 free.
