Park of the Week
Evergreen Jr. College Park
A fun activity to do with young kids is to
go feed the ducks. It's a great way to get rid of stale bread
while giving your kids some free entertainment!
At Evergreen Jr. College, they have a large
pond where ducks and geese seem to congregate while migrating.
There's also a small outdoor amphitheater, terraced with grass,
shade trees, and a peaceful view of the pond. We like to take a
picnic lunch, a waterproof blanket (try the new NeatSheet -- I
got mine from Target for $8), and bread scraps. You may have to
dodge a bit of goose-poopy, as we like to call it, but it's worth
the effort. Even on hot days, sitting in the shade with a calm
breeze is a good cool down.
If you like a more active outing, the
College offers several tennis courts (I think 4 or 6) open to the
public, and you can follow their walking trails around the pond
and sport field.
So for days when you want to do something
other than the typical play structure, try Evergreen's little
oasis.
(Extra tip -- if you just can't get up the
energy to pack your own lunch, there's a McDonald's on the corner
of San Felipe and Yerba Buena. And yes, it has a drive-thru! And
ATM if you're out of money too! Aren't we spoiled?)
