Some easy ideas and sources for birthday invitations

Think
about Your Theme
- A theme makes it easy to
decide on all the other details of your party --
including invitations! Following are some of the options
you have when putting together your party invitations:
Homemade
Invitations
- Get out that construction
paper and let's make something together! For my last teen
party, I simply used edged scissors to make a nice border
on black construction paper, and then wrote the
information using a silver gel pen. It looked very hip,
and was a breeze. My teen added stickers to them for her
own touch, and I drew little spirals randomly on the
card.
- What about cutting the
invitations into the shape of your theme, let's say
trains? Then draw a picture on one side, and information
on the other. If you make them the right size you can fit
them nicely into your standard envelopes.
- Think unusual invitations.
For a pirate theme make a handmade (or computer-created)
map, and roll it up into a paper towel cylinder. Mail
them wrapped in mysterious brown paper with the guest's
name and address written on the side. You'd be surprised
how many unusual items the Post Office has delivered.
- I saw something creative on
Martha Stewart the other day (no surprise there). She was
doing a rock climbing theme for teens, and made
invitations using water bottles and computer printed
instructions. See a picture here. Oh, yeah. She also did a
"Rocky Ledge" birthday cake. The point is, use
your imagination, and get your child involved, and make
your own!
- Here's another idea: roll up
your paper invitations and place inside a balloon. Fill
them up with helium (or just blow), and hand deliver to
your guests. To read the invitation, the child has to sit
on it and pop the balloon!
- Get free templates for
creating invitations from HP's website, Canon, and Xerox.
See below for some great links.
Internet
Invitations
- Many of us have been using
FREE internet invitations for years to notify our
"list" of upcoming events. Try it. It's FREE.
My favorite site is Evite. After signing up, it takes you
step by step through the creation process. They have
quite a few child birthday invitations, and after
selecting one you then input your party stats and,
presto!, your invitations are sent. Other sites who offer
this include: Invite Depot, Sendomatic, Hallmark, and Yahoo.
Purchased
Invitations
- When doing a cartoon
character theme, this is the easiest way to go. That way,
you can match your invitations to the other party
decorations, and give your guests a hint of what your
child is interested in. So many places to shop...of
course, I love Birthday Express, and they have the most
complete products in various themes.
