Building Blocks for Growing Minds
March 20, 2004
The wonderful world of books provides a warm, comfortable place for people of all ages to let their imagination run wild and free through reading. Building Blocks for Growing Minds (BBGM) opens the door of this world to children and their parents and focuses on the importance of literacy in our community.
This year, Building Blocks for Growing Minds will combine a heavy construction equipment petting zoo with educational and literacy-enriched activities for families in San Jose.
The petting zoo will give children and parents a chance to explore and learn about construction equipment from many of the development companies currently building in and around Downtown.
Partnering with major organizations in the literary, sports and entertainment world, BBGM presents activities that will embrace, educate and inspire San Jose children and their families.
Where: Downtown San Jose, San Fernando Street
The heavy construction equipment petting zoo will take place on San Fernando between 4th and 5th Streets, adjacent to the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Joint Library.
Activities and booths will be located on the library steps, porch and plaza.
Who: City of San Jose children and families will enjoy the free celebration. We expect over 4,000 families to join us in the festivities around literacy and education.
Overview: This free, public event will from 10am – 3pm will feature:
• entertainment by Bob the Builder
• book signing and readings from major Children’s book authors
• activities from Soccer Celebration of the San Jose Earthquakes
• main stage with puppet shows and storytelling
• arts and crafts, hands-on activities and “edu-tainment” booths books
• educational prizes for participants
This event is a crucial step towards establishing San Jose as a literary destination point with the means to nurture generations of readers in our community. Following the tradition of the 2002 Book Circus, BBGM will encourage families to discover the magic of books and the joys of reading for years to come.
